There was a time when the thought of photographing families terrified and frustrated me. I would take the requests on begrudgingly, stammering my way through a session where there was bound to be a toddler who wouldn't smile for the camera, and a mother upset about not getting that "perfect" shot.
And then, something shifted. Suddenly, I realized that it didn't matter who was smiling - what mattered was documenting families together, in their element. And so, I started spending my evenings and weekends, doing just that - capturing mothers scooping up crying babes, and father's tossing their probably-too-grown children in the air and catching them again with laughter.
I've been so privileged to be an intimate witness for the love that and connection that exists in families - and I am determined that all families should be able to maintain that magic. I believe that every family deserves the chance to thrive together. I believe that every family is worthy of love, togetherness, and ultimately - happiness, too.
At first, I didn't think there was much I could do to help but then I realized that the thing which taught me the love of families was the way that I could help.
SO, this Sunday, I am hosting a day of pay-what-you-can mini-sessions, with all proceeds benefiting the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center - an organization helping father's detained at the country's largest population immigration detention center, Cibola Detention Center, which is just 90 miles from Albuquerque.
